The campus
Bascom Hill climbs west from Park Street to Bascom Hall, with a statue of Abraham Lincoln near the entrance and North Hall, the first university building, on its slope. Below it, Library Mall meets the end of State Street, and Memorial Union sits on the south shore of Lake Mendota. Observatory Hill, with Washburn Observatory and two effigy mounds, rises to the west. Camp Randall Stadium, on the grounds of a Civil War training camp, fills the southwest corner.
