The course
Baltusrol is named for Baltus Roll, who farmed this land and was murdered in 1831. Louis Keller founded the club in 1895. A. W. Tillinghast designed the Lower and Upper courses as one 36-hole plan, the first of its kind in America, and both opened in June 1922. The Lower spreads over rolling parkland below Baltusrol Mountain. Its 4th is a par 3 over a pond, and it finishes with two par 5s. It has hosted four U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships. The Upper Course lies beside it.
