The course
Golf has been played on the links at St Andrews since the early 15th century, and in 1764 the course was cut from 22 holes to 18, which became the standard. Nine holes run out from the town and nine come back, crossing in a loop near the Eden Estuary. Fourteen holes share seven double greens. The Swilcan Burn crosses the 1st and 18th, Hell Bunker sits on the 14th, and the 17th, the Road Hole, runs past the Old Course Hotel.
