The course
No. 2 is the best known of Pinehurst's ten numbered courses. Donald Ross laid it out in the North Carolina Sandhills, it opened in 1907, and he kept refining it until his death in 1948. Its crowned greens shed short shots. A restoration finished in 2011 took out the rough, so sand, wiregrass and native scrub now line wide fairways under longleaf pines. It has hosted the U.S. Open four times, and in 2014 the men's and women's Opens were played there in back-to-back weeks.
