The campus
The Arch, a cast-iron gate patterned after the state seal, has faced downtown Athens across Broad Street since the 1850s. Behind it lies North Campus. Old College, the oldest building, stands near the Chapel and Herty Field, where the school's first home football game was played in 1892. Sanford Stadium, opened in 1929, sits to the south in a natural valley, and Tanyard Creek runs through a culvert under its field.
