The course
The Old Course lies between tall dunes and the Atlantic, just south of the town of Ballybunion. The club was founded in 1893 with 12 greens along the sandhills, and the course has had 18 holes since 1927. Tom Simpson, the English architect hired in 1936, made only small changes. A cemetery sits to the right of the 1st, and the 11th runs along the cliffs. At the 7th, the cliff edge has moved back 10 to 20 meters since 1951. The Cashen course lies to the south.
