The course
Kingsbarns runs along 1.8 miles of North Sea coast southeast of St Andrews, and every hole looks out to sea. Golf was first recorded here in 1793. The old links was plowed up for farming in 1850. A later course closed in World War II, when land mines were laid on the site. Kyle Phillips designed the present course, with dunes built across what had been largely flat farmland. It opened in July 2000. The par-3 15th plays to a green that juts into the sea.
