The course
Muirfield overlooks the Firth of Forth at Gullane, in East Lothian. It is home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, which drew up 13 rules of golf for a competition at Leith Links in 1744. The club moved here from Musselburgh in 1891, onto a course laid out by Old Tom Morris. Harry Colt reworked it in 1925. The front nine runs clockwise around the outside and the back nine runs counterclockwise inside it. No more than three holes in a row play in the same direction.
