The course
Royal Birkdale was founded in 1889 and moved to the Birkdale Hills in Southport in 1897, where George Lowe laid out 18 holes. F. G. Hawtree and J. H. Taylor later remodeled it, and the fairways now run through the valleys between tall sand dunes, which give spectators natural viewing points. The 18th plays toward the art deco clubhouse, built in 1935. The course has hosted The Open 11 times, most recently in 2026, and the Ryder Cup in 1965 and 1969.
