The course
Royal Liverpool was founded in 1869 on the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club at Hoylake, and horses raced on the links until 1876. Robert Chambers and George Morris laid out the first nine holes, and the course reached 18 in 1871. Most of it is level, but the holes nearest the coast run through sandhills by the Dee Estuary. The par-3 Little Eye, built for the 2023 Open, is named for an island in the estuary seen behind its green. The club has hosted The Open 13 times.
