The course
Royal Lytham was founded in 1886, and George Lowe laid out the present course, which opened in 1897. Harry Colt reworked it from 1919. It lies about half a mile inland, with a railway line on one side and houses all around, and 166 pot bunkers line its fairways and greens. It is the only Open venue that starts with a par 3. It has hosted The Open 11 times and the Ryder Cup twice, and The Open returns in 2028. The club's short course lies beside it.
