The course
Royal St George's was founded in 1887 by Laidlaw Purves, a London surgeon, who laid out the course in the dunes at Sandwich and meant it to rival St Andrews. In 1894 it held the first Open played outside Scotland, and it has hosted 15 in all. The drive at the 4th must carry a dune that holds the Himalaya bunker, more than 40 feet deep. The par-3 6th, the Maiden, is named for the dune beside its green, and a ditch called the Suez Canal crosses the 14th.
