The course
Royal Troon's Old Course runs out and back along the Firth of Clyde, south of Troon. The club was founded in 1878 and had 18 holes by the late 1880s. The first six holes run south along the shore. From the 7th the course turns inland through dunes and gorse, and from the 13th it heads back north. The 8th, the Postage Stamp, is a 123-yard par 3, the shortest hole in Open Championship golf. A railway runs along the 11th. The Portland course lies inland beside it.
