The course
Pine Valley lies in the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey, 14 miles southeast of Camden. George Crump bought the sandy site in 1913 for a group of Philadelphia golfers, and crews pulled 22,000 tree stumps. The first 11 holes opened in 1914, and holes 12 to 15 were finished after Crump died in 1918. Fairways and greens sit like islands in the sand. Hell's Half Acre, one of the largest bunkers in golf, splits the 7th fairway. The club's 10-hole Short Course lies to the west.
