The course
The Boston Marathon runs point to point, east from Hopkinton through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley and Newton, then Brookline and into Boston. It drops about 450 feet from start to finish, but the Newton hills, Heartbreak Hill among them, climb between miles 16 and 21. The last miles follow Beacon Street through Brookline to Kenmore Square, then the course turns right on Hereford Street and left on Boylston Street to the finish.
